
Donald Joseph Wood
A native Washingtonian, Don Wood has years of experience in print and web production, consulting and teaching. His professional career began in 1982 when he and his wife Lynette established a graphic design and consulting company that later expanded to provide offset printing and bindery services.
In 1986, Don accepted a position as director of publications for Oakwood University in Huntsville, Alabama. A year later, he was promoted to manager of Oakwood Graphixx—a post he held until 1995 when he decided to pursue a graduate degree at the Indiana University School of Journalism—one of the nation’s top-rated journalism schools. While attending IU, Don taught writing, reporting and editing; computerized publication design; and broadcast news. His instructional method, which earned him an excellence in teaching award, builds student confidence and satisfaction.
The recipient of the prestigious Knight Foundation Fellowship, Don earned the master’s degree in journalism from Indiana University.
Relocating to Washington, D.C. in 2000, Don taught media writing, publication design and broadcast news writing for the next two years at Howard University. Motivated by a strong desire to share the techniques of effective oral, visual and electronic communication to a wide audience, Don packaged his award-winning methods to address the needs of clients in the public and private sectors by starting Wood Communications. In addition to running this company, Don taught writing and communication courses at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia (2004 to 2007). Then, in the summer of 2007, Don accepted the call to serve as Communication Director for the Potomac Conference of Seventh-day Adventists where he served 167 churches with a combined membership of over 31,000 in Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C.
In 2008, Don suffered a series of health setbacks that forced him to call for a replacement at Potomac Conference. He recovered from each of the health issues, and returned to teaching at Virginia Tech. Then in 2010, Don accepted the position of Director of the Professional Development Center in the School of Business & Economics at Winston-Salem State University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina
A father of two adult children, Don has been married to Lynette for 31 years.
